Top 6 Best Dog Beds for Large Dogs: Orthopedic & Comfy Beds

Extra large dog beds

Having a large dog is great. Many large dog breeds make the perfect addition to a family with children. As a matter a fact, some of the most popular dog breeds in the USA are larger dog breeds – Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd to be exact, holding the first and the second place on the list.

Having a large dog has many benefits for sure, but one thing I found more difficult than when owning a smaller dog is – it can be hard to find large enough dog bed that can fit your 100+ lbs or even 200+ lbs dog!

I’ve made an excessive search for the best large dog beds that can fit our giant doggies and singled out the things I like about those beds, as well as things that could be better (if there was such a thing).

So, I am sure you’ll find a nice bed for your giant in my list of the best dog beds for large dogs!

But first, let’s take a look at some of the things we must pay attention to when purchasing a dog bed for our large dog.

How to choose the best dog bed for your large dog

Choosing a dog bed for a large dog

If your dog has health issues

Dogs with joint and muscle issues would most benefit from the memory foam filled bed. Those beds are comfortable and are good for reducing joint and muscle pain. The bed you decide to purchase should hold its shape and should not compress to prevent injury to bones and joints.

This is particularly important for older dogs and dogs that have arthritis or mentioned joint and muscle issues. The beds I singled out for this article do hold their shape so you can’t go wrong with some of those.

Measure your dog

To be certain your dog will indeed fit in the bed, you can measure them while they are laying down. Measure how much room they take and look for dog beds that have appropriate dimensions.

While I was searching for these extra large dog beds, I noticed that many of XL size beds are not that big after all. So make sure you check the dimensions.

Waterproof with removable cover

You never know what might happen. Your dog pees on the bed, spills wet dog food over the bed… It is a big deal if the bed cover is waterproof so the inside material stays dry. It is also a big plus for me personally if I can take the cover off and wash it in the machine.

Some people prefer to cover the dog bed with their sheet so there is no need for removable covers but I always leave the bed as is so being able to easily remove the cover and wash it in the machine is a big plus for me.

This bed is designed a little bit differently from the usual dog beds. It is made of knitted fabric and it is elevated on four legs. This bed is great if, for some reason, your dog doesn’t like memory foam beds. Also, it is great if you have a yard and want to have a bed that you can also use outside. As this one is elevated, it won’t get as dirty outside – only the legs might but you can easily clean them up with a cloth.

Some dogs might need some time to adjust to this new kind of bed and might not want to try it out at first. You can try luring them in with delicious and healthy dog treats or try putting a blanket or a sheet over the bed to get you dog to try it. But all in all, they will adjust in a few days and surely enjoy the bed for many years to come.

What I like about this bed:

  • Breathable fabric
  • Can be used inside and outside
  • Resists mold and mildew

I appreciate that you explained how waterproofing is very important in getting a pet bed. My dog’s pet bed is already worn out and he has only been using it for a few months. I wanted to get a new one that’s both sturdy and easy to clean up. I’m happy that I came across your article when I did. Thanks for giving me a better idea!
